Why does this matter?
Not every laser device suits every skin tone. A device that gives excellent results on fair skin can cause burns or pigmentation on darker skin if used with the wrong wavelength.
This applies to hair removal and to pigmentation or tattoo laser work alike — choosing the device is not guesswork, it is a decision built on an actual assessment.
This is why your skin tone is determined at the first appointment, not estimated by eye or left to whoever happens to be treating you on a given visit.
What is skin type, and which device suits it?
Skin type is a simple medical scale describing how dark the skin is and how it reacts to sun and laser — from very fair to very dark. Each type reacts differently to laser wavelengths, and that is the basis for choosing the device, not appearance alone.

Your skin tone is established at the first appointment using a recognised medical scale (Fitzpatrick) and recorded in your file with its date — so it is not re-estimated every visit and does not vary with whoever is treating you.
Before your appointment: avoid recent tanning
- Recent sun exposure or a tanning session temporarily changes skin colour and can affect how accurately your skin tone is assessed.
- Tell the team if you have had heavy sun exposure in the weeks before your session.

No laser session is ever performed without first determining your skin type — we do not skip this step for a returning patient's convenience.
